As part of National Transportation Week, citizens are invited to fill a St. Mary’s County Transit bus with non-perishable foods on Friday, May 21 and Saturday, May 22. These donations are critically needed to replenish local food banks. “Our local food pantries have seen a 60 percent increase in requests over the past year,” said Cynthia Brown, Interim Director, Department of Human Services. “Many of these requests are from people seeking assistance for the first time due to the economic downturn.”
A bus will be parked on the Governmental Center campus on Friday, May 21 in Leonardtown from 11:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. This bus will accept donations from county/state employees and the community. Five buses will be stationed throughout the county on Saturday, May 22 to accept donations. The buses will be located at the Food Lion in Charlotte Hall, the McKay’s Grocery Store in Leonardtown, the McKay’s Grocery Store in the Wildewood Shopping Center; the Giant Grocery Store in the First Colony Shopping Center and at Wal-Mart. Donations will be accepted on those days from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
All donated foodstuffs will be brought to the food pantries in St. Mary’s County. For more information on public transportation in St. Mary’s County, call 301-863-8400, extension 1120 or log on to the Department of Public Works and Transportation’s web page at
