Policy: Political Involvement
The Fellowship's status as a non-profit organization requires us to follow IRS guidelines. Also, our Articles of Incorporation state: "No substantial part of the activities of the Religious Corporation shall be the carrying on propaganda, or otherwise attempting to influence legislation, and the Religious Corporation shall not participate or intervene (including the publishing or distribution of statements), in any political campaign or behalf of any candidate for public office."
The UUA website clarifies that "substantial" is considered to be more than 5% of a congregation's time, energy, and money. Please read www.uua.org/documents/washingtonoffice/real_rules.doc whenever there is a question.
Board approval is needed for activities that have political ramifications.
