Unitarianism and Universalism are both historic 400-year-old faiths that grew from the Protestant Reformation and have roots in Europe and America. In 1961 the two agreed to consolidate to form the Unitarian Universalist Association.

Both faith traditions have always stressed individual freedom of belief. Today, Unitarian Universalists are at liberty to find their own religious beliefs. Thus, Unitarian Univeralism is a liberal religion. (The word "liberal" refers to personal freedom, not a political viewpoint.)

We keep an open mind to the religious questions people have struggled with in all times and places. We believe that personal experience, conscience and reason should be the final authorities in religion, and that in the end, religious authority lies not in a book or person or institution, but in ourselves. We are a "non-creedal" religion: we do not ask anyone to subscribe to a creed.
