Letter from the Minister
The poet Rae Armantrout observes the following:
Two plump, bald men
in gray tee-shirts
and tan shorts
are walking a small bulldog –
followed by the eyes
of an invisible third person.
In this excerpt from her poem, "Two, Three," she most likely refers to God and Jesus walking along... I like thinking that they are just hanging out in very earthly suits of flabby skin and shorts. This religious notion of real people--or this earthly notion of spiritual beings--gives meaning to my day. I meet many people who are spirits caught in flesh, to be released in due course. And what about that 'third eye,' the mystical concept found in several religious cultures? It is the one that sits above us and observes us, which we can access when we need. It doesn't have to be God, the Holy Spirit (referenced in the poem as following the two men) or a poet watching us. But it knows who we are. Don't freak out, but try to take comfort in it.
See you Sunday,
Rev. Michael
