"Between Fences" and "Barriers and Gateways"
Letter from Holly Burnham
Hello Fellow UUSFMers,
You may have noticed that I haven't been around much these last few months. While summer is traditionally a time when we travel and visit relatives, I've even been too busy to do that. I've been very busy at work, preparing for two exciting exhibitions, and lots of related programming, that I'd like to invite you to.
From September 19 through November 7, we'll have a Smithsonian Institution "Museums on Main Street" (MOMS) traveling exhibition called "Between Fences," about fences, borders, property issues, etc. throughout American history. You can find out more about this traveling exhibition at http://www.museumonmainstreet.org/exhibs_fences/fences.htm.
The other is Montpelier’s companion exhibit to Between Fences, called "Barriers & Gateways: The Immigrant Experience," about the challenges and successes that immigrants to the U.S. have experienced throughout history. You can learn more about this exhibition at www.pgparks.com/between_fences.
Both of these exhibits, by the way, relate to the UU Common Read: The Death of Josseline, as well as the current One Maryland One Book selection, Outcasts United (in fact, one of our programs is a discussion about Outcasts United).
During the time these exhibits are up, we also have several related programs, from a "dinner and a movie’ night to a play to family activities. The website, www.pgparks.com/between_fences has details on all these programs. I would love to share these exhibits and programs with you. I know Laurel is a long way to travel, but there are other things to see and do in the area as well. I can give you some suggestions if you'd like.
If you have any questions about these exhibits or programs, please feel free to contact me. Thank you very much. Hope to see you at Montpelier!
