Administrative business was the theme for the evening: CPCS lease, calendar, pamphlets and handouts, RE contracts, JPD paperwork, etc. Items of general interest are below.
Discussion Groups and Chalice Circles – What is the difference?
Judy is starting a chalice circle (following the end of the Traveler’s group) and it is open for membership now. It is called Heart-to-Heart, reflecting the name of the book to be used in the group. It is expected to run throughout the year and have 14 sessions. It will continue to fall under the Fellowship Builders interest area.
The group is a “chalice circle” and not a “discussion group.” The distinguishing feature is that once the membership of a chalice circle is established, no new members are accepted. Members of chalice circles may be UUFSM members, friends, or people not formally affiliated with the Fellowship. The members strive to achieve intimacy by committing to meetings, agreeing upfront to the topics, having a small group (appropriate to home settings), and agreeing to maintain confidentiality.
Discussion groups are considered “drop in” and less formal, although discretion and confidentiality may still be required for participation. The “UU World, UU Life” sessions will be run as a discussion group this coming year.
Monthly Charities - Preplanning for Social Justice Meeting on 25 September
The September charity will be a UUSC or UN relief group dedicated to Somalia. The October charity will be the UUA for Association Sunday. Other charities were proposed for the remainder of the year (including food pantries, medical aid, and local environmental cleanup). This recommendation and the year schedule is expected to be set at the Social Justice meeting on 25 September. Other activities such as participation is food drives, Christmas in April, and Christmas family sponsorship were discussed in preparation for the Interest Area meeting. Talk to Katy to get involved.
Review of the Policy for Board Minutes - Your Input Please
The board unanimously agreed on the following change to the policy regarding the sharing of the results of the board meetings:
The minutes from all board meetings shall be sent available upon request to all members via email. A copy of the minutes shall be placed in the UUFSM reference book and kept there for the fiscal year. Contact the Secretary for current year or the prior year’s minutes. Older minutes are archived with the Secretary and/or Historian. Highlights from the Board Meeting shall be in the newsletter.
