Our services generally follow a traditional Protestant format with hymns, readings from inspirational texts, and a sermon. At the beginning of our services, we light the chalice, which has been a symbol of Unitarian Universalism since the consolidation of Unitarians and Universalists in 1961. We often have songs from the choir or music from one of the talented musicians in our Fellowship.
Some people like to dress up for church, but jeans and T-shirts are not uncommon. Men often wear slacks and a shirt; many women wear dresses or blouses with skirts or slacks. Some children like to wear their party clothes; others come in shorts and T-shirts. On Easter Sunday, it's a UUFSM tradition to wear festive headgear.
