Volunteering in Religious Education

Being with the Children

Who's Involved in teaching Children's RE?
The Religious Education (RE) teachers and assistants are all volunteers who have attended UU services for at least six months (not necessarily every week, but about that length of time). This gives the adults the chance to learn about Unitarian Universalism before they share their knowledge with the children.

All adults in the Fellowship are encouraged to be involved with RE; after all, our children are our future! There are many options: you can assist in a classroom or chaperone a field trip, take a turn in the nursery, work with the Youth Group, be on the RE committee, organize schedules, set up the classrooms, help with the library, share a special hobby or interest with the children (We've had classes on Yoga, Buddhism, Native American rituals, and Music Therapy), teach on a regular basis, or just carry a box or two on Sunday mornings! There are always things to do.

What's involved in being an RE Teacher?
The RE program year is divided into four sessions: Fall, Winter, Spring, and Summer. Each session is about 13 weeks.
Teachers sign up for one session at a time, and most classes are taught by a team of 2-4 teachers, who take turns from week to week or month to month. This way, signing up to be a teacher means being with the children for six to eight Sundays a year, not a life-time commitment.  Teachers usually start out as assistants, then attend the teacher training sessions and work with co-teachers before they go "solo."  The curriculum is easy to follow and gives plenty of good ideas about different things to do in the classroom.

Assistants are encouraged to sign up for a quarterly session, too, perhaps assisting a few weeks in a row or coming in once a month.  If your schedule doesn't permit that, we can certainly accommodate an occasional "drop in" too!

How do I get involved in teaching RE?
If you have something you'd like to share with enthusiastic young people, or if you'd like to join our teaching teams on a more permanent basis, please contact the RE Committee.

RE Committee

The RE Committee sets long-term goals, oversees the RE budget, chooses curricula, and assists the RE teachers.  Meetings are held monthly, though there may be schedule changes with holidays and other various conflicts. See the UUFSM calendar for latest information.
